Mini Poderosas was founded in 2016 by Azucena Bravo who also serves in the Tucson community as a school psychologist. She began her career serving children in a Title 1 school and mentoring young ladies in the southwest side of Tucson. Together with the school counselor, she established a club called the “girl group,” which provided the young ladies with a safe space to talk about girlhood, along with family and school stressors. Some of the stories shared in these spaces served as evidence of the disparity their families were facing. After five years of working and multiplying this group from 5 to 25 participants, Azucena realized the girls needed a place where they could receive guidance, feel empowered, and work on confidence-building/emotional regulation skills outside of the school. She held a pilot summer camp in 2016 and the nonprofit status was approved in February 2021. Over the years, Mini Poderosas has become a support system for the entire family unit, by addressing their needs and connecting them to community resources and mentors. Its growth and community recognition is evident that Mini Poderosas is committed to making a positive impact in every participant’s life.
